NFRC to Offer ACE Training Following its Spring Meeting
The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) will offer a workshop for those seeking certification as an NFRC Approved Calculation Entity (ACE), following its Spring 2010 Membership Meeting. The workshop will be held April 15-16 in New Orleans.
In January, NFRC fully launched its Component Modeling Approach (CMA) Product Certification Program. CMA enables whole-product energy performance ratings for commercial fenestration projects using data from the three primary components of fenestration: frames, spacers, and glazing.
The two-day workshop is designed for those seeking certification to become an NFRC ACE.
At the end of the workshop, a take-home exam will be provided for attendees to complete and submit after the training. A Certificate of Approval will be sent to those who successfully pass the exam.
NFRC ACEs will be certified to configure whole fenestration products and calculate U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, and Visible Transmittance ratings for those products seeking NFRC certification in the CMA Product Certification Program. The workshop will include limited use of the latest version of THERM 6 and use of the Component Modeling Approach Software Tool (CMAST).
The workshop will begin after the conclusion of the Spring 2010 Membership Meeting. Both the workshop and the meeting will take place at the Doubletree Hotel New Orleans.
The registration deadline for the ACE workshop is Friday, April 2.

WESTLab Becomes First Independent ACE
WESTLab, a long-time NFRC-accredited simulation laboratory, has recently fulfilled all of the requirements for becoming an Independent Approved Calculation Entity (ACE) Organization.
WESTLab is now the first independent ACE organization, and it joins EFCO, which has been approved as the first Manufacturer ACE organization.
ACE organizations have been established within NFRC’s new (Component Modeling Approach (CMA) Program as the firms who use the CMA software tool (CMAST) to construct virtual fenestration products and issue label certificates to prove compliance with the building code requirements for fenestration energy-related performance.
For more information regarding the CMA Program and the new ACE Organizations, visit NFRC’s website: http://www.nfrc.org/CMAprogram.aspx.

Deadline for Federal Remodeling Tax Credit Looms
The tax credit for energy efficient replacement windows and doors was introduced in 2009 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It will expire, however, at the end of 2010. Accordingly, this may be a good time for homeowners to replace their windows.
The federal government established fairly stringent guidelines for windows to qualify for the tax credit.
For example, replacement windows must have a U-Factor rating of .30 or lower and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient rating of .30 or lower.
